SideOneDummy Records is very proud to welcome Broadway Calls as the newest band on the SideOneDummy roster!

January 5, 2009 - Los Angeles, CA - Broadway Calls are a power trio from Rainier, Oregon, which is about one hour north of Portland and has a population of just under 2000 people.

In the tradition of bands like Jawbreaker, Green Day, The Jam and Alkaline Trio, Broadway Calls craft songs that are filled with gritty guitar, breakneck drums, infectious hooks and unforgettable choruses that captivate any ear that gives them two minutes and thirty seconds of a chance.

The band is made up of Ty Vaughn (guitar/vocals), Josh Baird (drums) and Matt Koenig (bass). Adeline Records released the band's debut self-titled record in early 2008 and they played the Vans Warped Tour all summer! A fall tour with Polar Bear Club and Crime in Stereo followed. Shows with Rancid, Alkaline Trio and Bad Religion rounded out their year.

2009 promises to be a monumental year for Broadway Calls. They will be touring with Alkaline Trio as direct support on their February UK/ European tour and will be going into the studio to track songs for a late summer release on SideOneDummy Records! Stay tuned.

Coheed and Cambria to release 9-Disc Box Set

COHEED AND CAMBRIA TO RELEASE 9-DISC BOX SET ON MARCH 17, 2009 TO COMMEMORATE THEIR HISTORIC NEVERENDER SHOWS IN NEW YORK CITY

Columbia Records is excited to announce that on March 17, 2009, Coheed and Cambria will release Neverender, The Children of the Fence boxset, a release that is possibly as ambitious as the event itself.

Neverender marked the triumphant culmination of the band's four-album album cycle. The historic four-night event featured the band performing each of their four albums in their entirety on four consecutive nights, October 22-25 2008 at New York’s Terminal 5 and was the first time that Coheed had performed the saga that connects the albums in order. The band performed in front of nearly 11,000 of their most passionate fans, who flew in from all over the world, organized for months in advance to carpool and share hotel rooms, lined up all day in the rain to get the best spots on the floor. Selling out in three hours, Neverender’s New York dates prompted a tide of demand that spawned three other sold-out Neverender stands, in LA, Chicago, and London.

The box set documents the New York stand (as well as clips from all 3 other cities) in one massive package that will include four live DVDs, four live audio CDs, one documentary DVD, a 10x10 hardcover 48-page photo book and a 7-1/2” custom metal dragonfly. A condensed two-disc DVD will also be made available. Pre-sales for the box began on Friday, Dec 12. Fans who pre-order it will get their names included on a “Children of the Fence” page inside the book. The first 3,000 copies will be signed by the band.

Coheed and Cambria begin a tour with Slipknot on Jan, 23rd. Full tour dates are below.

Flogging Molly's annual Green 17 Tour 2009 starts Feb.15, 2009 in New York!

December 5, 2008 - Los Angeles, CA - St. Patrick's Day is traditionally celebrated March 17th each year, but for FLOGGING MOLLY the festivities start February 15th when the band embarks on their annual GREEN 17 TOUR. Now in its fifth year, The GREEN 17 TOUR was created to spread the revelry of St. Patrick's Day to cities across North America. Clearly it's a touring recipe that's been well received, as it's now a celebration that's anticipated by fans from coast to coast.

2008 has been a whirlwind year for Flogging Molly, a band whose rabid fan base was formed almost solely as a result of the incessant touring and DIY aesthetic. Their 2008 release Float hit via SideOneDummy Records on March 4, 2008 and captured the band a No. 4 slot on the Billboard Top 200, a No.1 spot on the Billboard Independent Albums Chart and No. 2 on Billboard's Alternative Album Chart. Following on the heels of the release, Flogging Molly embarked on a sold-out spring North American Tour, followed by tours in Japan, Australia and Europe (where they've toured four times in 2008). The band has also made high profile appearances at the Coachella and Lollapalooza Festivals, as well as a performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The 2009 Green 17 Tour will be supported by the release of a third radio single, "Lightning Storm." The tour will be making 22 stops nationwide from February through March, including two festivals, Langerado in Miami and the Shamrock Festival in Washington D.C.

Tickets go on sale for the 2009 Green 17 Tour on Saturday, December 13th through all of the normal ticket outlets. For more detailed ticket info and updates on the 2009 Green 17 Tour, visit...

ONE SMALL STEP FOR
LANDMINES
- Free Digital EP Out Now
-------------------------------------------------------
* Download If You Could Get Over Me
* Shows with Jim Ward
* Appearing at Invisible Children Benefit
-------------------------------------------------------

One Small Step For
Landmines
(Tallahassee, F.L.) is now offering its new acoustic EP,
If You Could Get Over
Me
, for free digital download.
Snag your copy here.

The download includes six brand-new songs, plus an eight-page booklet with art and design by the incomparable Jerrod Landon Porter. JLP also redesigned the band's myspace page...which normally I wouldn't mention (because myspace sucks it) but it's worth checking out for the animated graphic of Kevin riding his bike around the city.

In other news, One Small Step For Landmines is playing five shows in Australia with Jim Ward (Sleepercar / Sparta) beginning tomorrow. For everyone else - or at least those of you on the West Coast - the band will also be playing the Invisible Children Benefit Concert in Hollywood, C.A. on December 19th. The show will feature acoustic performances from Dustin Kensrue (Thrice), Chris Conley (Saves The Day), Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and Jim Ward.

Shows
-------------------------------------------------------
DEC 06 - Melbourne, Australia @ Bang! w/ Jim Ward
DEC 09 - Sydney, Australia @ Annandale Hotel w/ Jim Ward
DEC 11 - Cornulla, Australia @ Brass Monkey w/ Jim Ward
DEC 12 - Bulli, Australia @ Heritage w/ Jim Ward
DEC 13 - Brisbane, Australia @ Thriller w/ Jim Ward
DEC 19 - Hollywood, CA @ The Troubadour / Invisible Children Benefit

One Small Step For Landmines released the digital single Good Men Die Young And I'm Not Feeling Well in July of this year while its debut Self-titled full-length came out in September of 07. The band is currently writing and recording songs for a new long-player due out in 2009.

- One Small Step For Landmines have done something very, very right. - For The Sound
- A prime example of how to promote joy and quality in pop music, two essential qualities often forgotten. - New-Noise
- Landmines churns out fun, straight ahead rock, but there is a deeper significance to their work that makes this so compelling. - Jersey Beat
- An astonishingly energetic and fresh piece of work that makes the overwrought whining of the haircut bands look irrelevant and tired. - Subba-Cultcha
- Boasting pleasantly unexpected complexities - off-kilter drumbeats, bittersweet melodies and a certain battered charm - watch out for this trio. - Rock Sound

Hopeless Records announces 2009 Take Action! Tour

HOPELESS RECORDS NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION SUB CITY ANNOUNCES THE 2009 TAKE ACTION! TOUR- WITH HEADLINER CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR- ALONG WITH MEG & DIA, BREATHE CAROLINA, EVERY AVENUE, AND ANARBOR

THE ANNUAL CHARITY TOUR ENCOURAGES YOUNG PEOPLE TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN THE WORLD AND WILL AGAIN BENEFIT NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DOSOMETHING.ORG

TOUR DATES, TICKET INFORMATION FOR THE FEBRUARY & MARCH '09 TOUR TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON

DECEMBER 1, 2008- Hopeless Records, through their non profit organization Sub City is pleased to once again organize and present the Take Action! Tour. The 2009 lineup will feature headliner CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR, along with MEG & DIA, BREATHE CAROLINA, EVERY AVENUE, and ANARBOR. The annual nationwide charity tour, now in its eighth year, raises funds and awareness for youth involvement in charitable action, and for the second straight year Take Action has chosen not-for-profit organization DoSomething.org to benefit from the funds raised and to help spread the message of action to young people across the country.

DoSomething.org is a national not-for-profit that believes that young people have the power to make a difference. They inspire, empower and celebrate a generation of doers: young people who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action.

DoSomething.org CEO Nancy Lublin says of the not-for-profit teaming up with Take Action! Tour: "Music has always moved generations. We're psyched to partner with Take Action! We believe that there is a lot of creativity and passion in generation Z (kids under age 25). Their idea of getting involved isn't writing a big check or attending a charity dinner--they actually do stuff."

Each Take Action tour stop is a unique experience where fans are exposed to a great show along with encouragement and information from the bands, charity partners, and sponsors about how they can get involved with causes that are important to them. In addition to the good time and inspiration, 10% of the ticket price from each ticket sold is donated to DoSomething.org, which makes each fan in attendance an active participant in financially supporting non profit action. To date Sub City, with the help of hundreds of thousands of young people, has raised over $550,000 through the Take Action initiative. The tour has previously featured many future stars including: The Plain White T's, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Paramore, Every Time I Die, Jimmy Eat World, Avenged Sevenfold, Hawthorne Heights, Chiodos, Thrice, Anti-Flag, Silverstein, Dillinger Escape Plan, and many more.

This year's headliner CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR, touring in support of its second full-length release Rotation, is one of the brightest bands in the current music scene. Hailing from Buffalo, lead singer Shaant Hacikyan says of being on the Take Action! Tour: "It's an awe inspiring opportunity to be a part of such an empathetic tour and cause. It has endured the years and has remained a staple based on its brilliant fuel: consideration. Knowing that we are able to do what we love and simultaneously lend a helping hand is a beautiful thing. We are beyond thrilled to be a part Take Action!"

A band on the brink of mass crossover appeal, Utah's MEG & DIA is thrilled to be onboard as part of the Take Action! Tour. "All five of us in Meg & Dia are very excited to be part of a tour that supports making ones community a better and more beautiful place," Dia Frampton declares. "Many non-profit organizations get buried and do not receive the attention they deserve. We hope we can help point out the many places people can go, and hopefully will go, to donate time and money for good causes." Meg Frampton adds: "We are so excited to be part of a tour promoting not just one particular organization or charity, but the single notion of how important it is to get out there and "do something" to help out with any part of the world that you feel passionately about and you feel is in need of a helping hand."

Denver's BREATHE CAROLINA, a two-piece band fusing elements of electronica and punk/post hardcore, touring in support of its latest release It's Classy, Not Classic on Rise Records, is also quite aware of the impact the Take Action! Tour has. "I'm very excited to be a part of the Take Action! Tour because it promotes a positive message," notes David Schmitt of Breathe Carolina. "I'm also pumped to make new friends and Cute Is What We Aim For has been a long time favorite of mine and to be able to share the stage with them will be amazing."

Marysville, Michigan natives EVERY AVENUE have taken 2008 by storm with the release of their debut, full length record Shh, Just Go With It, endless touring, and the release of their new music video for, "Think Of You Later (Empty Room)." They are excited to look ahead into 2009 and kick off the year on the Take Action! Tour. "Using music to promote a good cause is something we are honored to be a part of. Take Action! highlights the importance of how little things can make huge impacts," says vocalist Dave Strauchman. "We can't explain how much it means to us to be involved with DoSomething.org. They are a great non-profit organization and the Take Action! Tour is a unique opportunity for bands and fans to come together and move forward to make changes in their community. It goes to show the significance that even one person can have."

Hopeless Records’ ANARBOR hail from Phoenix, Arizona and the early buzz on the band’s recent digital release, The Natural Way, indicates that big things are in store for the pop-rock four-piece. Speaking of their involvement, front man Slade Echeverria explains, "When we first heard that we were going on Take Action tour, we were all so excited to be a part of the amazing line up. The best part of Take Action is the charity aspect. We're so proud to be supporting Sub City and DoSomething.org by playing our music and are honored to be chosen to represent the Hopeless/Sub City family on this tour."

About Hopeless Records and Sub City: Founded in 1993, Hopeless Records is a Southern California independent record label home to breakout artists All Time Low, There For Tomorrow, Anarbor, The Human Abstract, and many more. Throughout the 15 year history of Hopeless Records the label has released over 100 albums and launched the careers of Avenged Sevenfold, Thrice, and Melee. In 1999 Hopeless Records formally started supporting non-profit organizations under the Sub City name with charitable albums, tours, and events. Now itself a registered 501c3 non profit organization, Sub City continues this mission of raising funds and awareness for worthy causes and to date has raised over $1.5 million dollars for over 50 non-profit organizations.

Fake Problems sign to Side One Dummy

Set to release It's Great to Be Alive on February 17, 2009

Fake Problems are a four piece eclectic, operatic, independent band of nomads that originate from Naples, FL. They will periodically return home to write new songs, sleep, fix their van and say hello to their friends. The rest of their time is spent on the road bringing their fiercely unique sound to young and old. Since the inception of the band in 2005 these guys have logged an impressive 200+ shows a year, released an EP and a Full Length album on Sabot Records. They are now set to release their next Full Length album, It's Great To Be Alive on Feb.17, 2009 (SideOneDummy Records).

Chris Farren (Guitar/Vocals) stands on stage left and delivers a vocal that has a maturity that is unexpected from such a young musician. The guitar playing of Casey Lee is equally as unique and brings a color and mood to the music that is very rare and exciting. Bass player Derek Perry and drummer Sean Stevenson provide a solid, creative rhythm section that seals the signature of the Fake Problems sound. The band also features a wonderful collection of horn parts throughout their records and occasionally tour with horn players.

The lead off track, "1234" sets the tone for the album and leads perfectly into the stand out track, "The Dream Team." Other highlights include, "The Heaven & Hell Cotillion" which chants the straight forward chorus of "I'm going to Heaven and you're going to Hell." The somber "Too Cold Too Hold" & "Tabernacle Song" keep the album interesting around every turn.

SideOneDummy is proud to be releasing Fake Problems - It's Great To Be Alive in stores on Feb.17, 2009.

1. 1234 1:25
2. The Dream Team 2:14

Bruce Springsteen said, "Towards the end of recording 'Magic,' excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing. When my friend producer Brendan O'Brien heard the new songs, he said, 'Let's keep going.' Over the course of the next year, that's just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year's tour. I hope 'Working on a Dream' has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we've ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end."

"Working on a Dream" is Bruce Springsteen's twenty-fourth album and was recorded and mixed at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, GA with additional recording in New York City, Los Angeles, and New Jersey.

Beartrap PR helps Pastepunk.com celebrate 10th Anniversary!

Download Free Pastepunk / Beartrap MP3 Compilation with 25 new, unreleased and rare songs.

-------------------------------------------------------
* 25 new, unreleased and rare songs from De La Hoya, Jena Berlin, Look Mexico, Pomegranates, Scream Hello, Nakatomi Plaza, Broadway Calls, Jumpercable, La Dispute, more!
-------------------------------------------------------

In punk rock, stating that you've been around for a decade is essentially admitting that you're an ancient vessel amidst a sea of doe-eyed, baby-faced, sometimes-talented (but often not) newbies who have barely tested the chilly DIY waters before sailing for warmer shores. Not to say that crusty old people rule, but there are certainly a handful that possess a nugget or two of wisdom and should be looked upon with reverence and admiration.

Such is the case with well-respected, often-imitated-but-never-duplicated webzine Pastepunk.com.

Ten years ago to the day, Jordan Baker created the site as an outlet against boredom and vapidity of dorm room life. And while diligently sticking it out for so long is impressive, all this talk about who has the most notches on their studded punk rock belt or more indie cred means nothing unless you're contributing something relevant and interesting...and more importantly, doing it with passion and unshakable dedication. Jordan was one of the first people with whom I ever worked when I entered the fray almost nine years ago; I can state without hesitation that he and Pastepunk measure up to those qualifications.

With an archive of more than 10,000 news posts, 3000 album reviews and 300 interviews from bands such as Bad Religion, Rise Against, Thrice, Dropkick Murphys, H20, Less Than Jake, Bane, Set Your Goals, Strike Anywhere, Modern Life Is War, Against Me!, Crime In Stereo, Paint It Black, Thursday and AFI, Pastepunk's quality of content ranks up there with the best. What's more is that Jordan and his staff not only entertain on a daily basis, they do so with thought-provoking commentary and discerning tastes. In the words of the site's creator:

"As a teen, I spent countless hours reading MRR, Punk Planet and Flipside, obsessing over music reviews and searching for a consistent voice of recommendation. I have tried to be that source with Pastepunk, relishing the role of being a filter in a world where the number of bands is simply overwhelming. It hasn't always been easy, but the relentless, addictive search to discover the next great hardcore, punk, metal or indie band is a desire that runs through my bones. I've always said that I'll keep doing Pastepunk until it isn't fun anymore and it means the world to me that we're still here."

To mark the occasion, Jordan and I have gathered 25 songs from Beartrap PR bands, creating the Pastepunk 10th Anniversary MP3 Compilation. It includes a number of previously unreleased songs, rare and live material, demo recordings for upcoming releases and several exclusive tracks recorded specifically for the comp. All 25 MP3s are completely free, but only available for the next month -until November 16th. For more information, go here: http://www.pastepunk.com/features.php?v=273

Or directly download a zip file (including cover art and detailed information about every song) here: http://www.jordanbaker.com/mp3/PP10Anniversary/PP10Anniversary.zip

And by all means, feel free to pass around the link or post it on your website!

Santana to release Multi Dimensional Warrior on October 14th

ALL TRACKS PERSONALLY SELECTED BY CARLOS SANTANA

Title arrives in stores October 14th of Columbia/Legacy

A decade after their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame (in January 1998), the hypnotic power of Santana – to mesmerize crowds of tens of thousands in the world’s biggest stadiums, or to cast the same spell on a single listener in their solitude – continues to be one of the enduring and mysterious pleasures of the band’s music. That meditative power has coursed through Santana’s recordings for four decades, but has never been the exclusive focus of any one collection – until now.

Multi Dimensional Warrior is a unique project, with every track personally selected and sequenced by Carlos Santana to create an engaging journey through a soundscape of moods and feelings. In an unprecedented concept, disc one comprises 14 vocal performances chosen from albums spanning the 1970s, ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s, while disc two comprises 14 instrumental performances from albums covering the same years. Multi Dimensional Warrior is the first anthology to include tracks from the band’s three major label associations: Columbia, Polydor/ PolyGram, and Arista/BMG. With just three exceptions, all of the albums represented on disc one are different than the albums represented on disc two. Carlos Santana supervised new overdubs to five tracks on the set. He personally added guitar to “Spirit” and “Right Now,” Santana band member Chester Thompson contributed piano to “Let There Be Light,” and Barbara Higbie added harp to “Praise” and “Let There Be Light.”

Multi Dimensional Warrior will arrive in stores October 14th on Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

History swirls around Santana, signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis in late-1968. They began recording in January 1969 – although the follow-up sessions of May 1969 were the ones eventually used for their debut album. That self-titled release came out on August 19, 1969, the day after the end of the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair, where they performed on Saturday afternoon. WARRIOR includes one of their oldest signatures, “Samba Pa Ti,” the B-side of their fourth single, “Oye Como Va,” from the second Santana album, Abraxas (1970).

At the far end of the Columbia timeline are the final three albums to bear the Santana name – and the only three albums on WARRIOR to be represented by one track each on disc one and disc two. Early 1987’s Freedom – which reunited original band members Gregg Rolie on lead vocals and keyboards (after his 1975-85 founding stint in Journey), drummer Mike Shrieve, and percussionist José ‘Chepito’ Areas – is the source for “Praise” and two instrumentals, “Bella” and “Love Is You.”

At the end of 1987, Carlos Santana delivered Blues For Salvador, his final Columbia solo album, which won his first GRAMMY Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. WARRIOR includes the closing title instrumental, as well as the opening vocal medley of “Bailando/Aquatic Park.” A long hiatus ensued before Santana released its final Columbia studio album in 1990, Spirits Dancing In The Flesh. That album’s opening track, “Let There Be Light,” featuring lead singer Alex Ligertwood (Santana’s longest-running vocalist, from 1979 to 1995), is the appropriate opening track of WARRIOR. An instrumental track from Spirits, “Full Moon” appears on disc two.

Santana’s two decades at Columbia Records encompassed some 25 studio and live album releases, comprising band albums and solo projects by Carlos Santana. On the vocal side, WARRIOR also revisits Festival (1976, with “The River”); Moonflower (1977, with “I’ll Be Waiting”); and Beyond Appearances (1985, with “Brotherhood,” “Spirit,” “Right Now”). On the instrumental side, WARRIOR includes tracks from Marathon (1979, “Aqua Marine”) and Zebop! (1981, “I Love You Much Too Much”).

Santana had a brief but productive three-year stay at PolyGram, starting with the May 1992 release of Milagro (which means “miracle”). The album was dedicated to two close friends, Miles Davis and long-time Santana manager and booking agent Bill Graham (who died respectively in September and October, 1991) and contained tributes to four of Santana’s inspirations, John Coltrane, Gil Evans, Marvin Gaye, and Bob Marley. From that album, WARRIOR offers four vocals on disc one: “Life Is For Living,” “Saja/Right On,” and two Santana originals, “Somewhere In Heaven” and “Your Touch.”

Milagro was also the name given to an important charitable foundation created by Deborah and Carlos Santana, who believe that children are divine miracles of light and hope for the world. With funds generated by concert tickets, donations and generous individual and corporate donors, the Milagro Foundation makes grants to tax-exempt organizations that work with children and youth in the San Francisco Bay Area, the United States and countries around the world touched by the music of Santana. The Milagro Foundation can be reached at PO Box 9125, San Rafael, CA 94912-9125.

Attention focused on the Milagro album as Santana toured through 1992 and mourned the April ’93 death of César Chavez. Later that year, Sacred Fire, a live album was released. Santana returned in 1994 with a final PolyGram album, Brothers, essentially a trio collaboration by Carlos, his brother Jorge, and nephew Carlos Hernandez. Three of its instrumentals are included on WARRIOR: “Blues Latino,” “En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor,” and “Luz, Amor y Vida.”

A five-year hiatus from recording followed, ending in 1999 with the release of Supernatural. It was Santana’s first album for Arista Records, and a welcome reunion with Clive Davis, who produced the album with Carlos. Supernatural was an industry phenomenon – 15-times RIAA platinum in the U.S. alone, the #6 best-selling album in Soundscan history, with nearly double that number of sales worldwide. The album spent 102 weeks on the Billboard chart including 12 weeks at #1.

Most significantly, Supernatural generated an all-time record-breaking nine GRAMMY awards including Album Of the Year and Best Rock Album. Among the instrumentals on Supernatural (and included on WARRIOR) is “El Farol,” which won the GRAMMY for Best Pop Instrumental. (“El Farol” was also the B-side of the worldwide smash hit single and triple-GRAMMY Award winner “Smooth,” co-written by and featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty).

Supernatural was a hard act to follow – but 2002’s Shaman gave Santana a second consecutive #1 multi-platinum album. The album’s title alluded to traditional and primitive religious figures who are in touch with the spirit world, an atmosphere that is conjured up with “Victory Is Won,” the closing track on disc two of Multi Dimensional Warrior.

New Dylan album to stream on NPR!

NPR Music is exclusively streaming Tell Tale Signs, the highly-anticipated forthcoming album from Bob Dylan, as of Tuesday, September 30 at midnight, one week ahead of the album’s release on October 7. The entire 2-CD, 27-song set will be available to hear on-demand at NPR Music for the week leading up to its official release.

Tell Tale Signs is the 8th installment in Dylan’s “Bootleg Series,” and features previously unreleased recordings, live performances and alternate versions of songs recorded during sessions for some of his most acclaimed albums, Oh Mercy and Time Out of Mind among them. Also included on the album are Dylan’s recordings for the soundtracks of the films Lucky You, Gods & Generals and North Country, and “32-20 Blues,” his first ever release of a Robert Johnson song.

Mikal Gilmore of Rolling Stone writes, “...Tell Tale Signs is less an anthology than an album in its own right. It seems designed to tell a story that sharpens and expands the vista of mortal and cultural disintegration that has been the chief theme of 1997's Time Out of Mind, 2001's Love and Theft, and 2006's Modern Times – perhaps the most daring music he's ever made. Tell Tale Signs makes plain that Dylan knows the caprices of the world he lives in, now more than ever.”

Creedence re-issues!

Here's a opportunity for the Dude to get his Creedence back (but probably not his tape deck)...

From the press release:

The first six albums by Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees Creedence Clearwater Revival will be reissued by Fantasy Records (a unit of Concord Music Group) on September 30, 2008 as six individual expanded-edition CDs. The set marks the legendary band’s 40th anniversary. The albums — Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy & the Poor Boys, Cosmo’s Factory and Pendulum, all originally released from 1968-70 —have been digitally remastered and contain an array of rarities: B-sides, unreleased studio and live material, even a summit between the band and Booker T & the MGs. The reissues will be presented in Digi-Paks that faithfully recreate each original album package in meticulous detail. All feature liner notes by world-class rock music journalists such as Robert Christgau, Ben Fong-Torres, Dave Marsh, Joel Selvin and Ed Ward.

These albums feature the original band from El Cerrito, California: John Fogerty (chief songwriter, vocalist and guitarist), Tom Fogerty (guitar), Stu Cook (bass) and Doug Clifford (drums). The four cut their teeth as a Tommy Fogerty & the Blue Velvets and later as the Golliwogs. Then, in 1967, after John’s stint in the military, they reunited as Creedence Clearwater Revival and found their own groove, inspired by the music of their youth. “Although they sounded like no other band,” Fong-Torres notes, “They redefined rock and roll. They showed, in the most entertaining way possible, how the music could embrace — and was, in fact, founded on — elements of R&B and the blues, country, folk, and jazz, as well as a world of other musical forms. Creedence were pioneers in the fusion of rock and country. They were roots before ‘roots’ took hold as a music genre.”

A quick look at the individual reissues:

Creedence Clearwater Revival [Expanded Reissue]: This album included CCR’s first smash hit, the Dale Hawkins song “Suzie Q,” plus the classic cover of Screaming Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You.” The reissue contains four bonus tracks: “Call it Pretending” (the B-side of the band’s first single), the band’s first recording of a cover of Bo Diddley’s “Before You Accuse Me” (later re-recorded for Cosmo’s Factory), a live version of “Ninety-Nine and a Half” recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium in 1969, and a full-length live version of “Suzie Q.” Almost famous former Rolling Stone editor Ben Fong-Torres wrote the notes.

Bayou Country [Expanded Reissue]: Creedence Clearwater’s second album was chock full of hits and much-played album tracks: “Proud Mary,” “Born on the Bayou,” the Little Richard cover “Good Golly Miss Molly,” the seven-minute “Graveyard Train” and the eight-minute “Keep on Choogling.” The reissue also contains a longer alternate take of the album track “Bootleg,” live versions of “Born on the Bayou” and “Proud Mary,” and a psychedelic blues jam recorded live by San Francisco's seminal KSAN-FM called “Crazy Otto.” Annotator was San Francisco Chronicle pop music editor Joel Selvin.

Green River [Expanded Reissue]: Green River contained the hits and notable album tracks “Green River,” “Bad Moon Rising” and “Lodi” plus a cover of Ray Charles’ blues standard “Night Time is the Right Time.” Bonus material includes “Broken Spoke Shuffle,” the instrumental track to a song John Fogerty never finished, another unfinished track called “Glory Be,” plus three live tracks: “Bad Moon Rising” from the 1971 Berlin concert, “Green River/Suzie Q” from the 1971 Stockholm show, and “Lodi,” recorded in Hamburg. Liner notes by the esteemed critic Dave Marsh.

Willy & the Poor Boys [Expanded Reissue]: Willy came out in 1969, when, as annotator Ed Ward writes, “a period when Creedence, surely the most anomalous band in the San Francisco explosion of the late ‘60s, was also proving its most commercial seller of them all.” The album contains the anthemic “Fortunate Son” along with “Down on the Corner” and a cover of the traditional folk song “The Midnight Special.” Bonus tracks include live versions of “Fortunate Son” and “It Came Out of the Sky,” plus an unreleased studio version of “Down on the Corner” recorded with Booker T & the MGs for a TV special at the band’s Berkeley rehearsal hall. The song features John Fogerty trading licks with guitar hero Steve Cropper.

Cosmo’s Factory [Expanded Reissue]: Cosmo’s Factory was the fourth and biggest of the string of five Top 10 albums Creedence Clearwater Revival released in 1969 and 1970. Included were “Travelin’ Band,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Run Through the Jungle” and covers from Marvin Gaye (CCR’s signature take on “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”), Bo Diddley, Roy Orbison and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. Bonus material includes a bare bones, horns-free remake of “Travelin’ Band,” a live version of “Up Around the Bend” from the 1971 European tour, plus an unreleased version of “Born on the Bayou” emanating from the CCR/Booker T & the MGs summit which took place in 1970 at Cosmo’s Factory studio. Notes were penned by Robert Christgau.

Pendulum [Expanded Reissue]: Creedence by this time was the top-selling rock band in the world, coming off seven consecutive Top 10 hits. The album contained the hits “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” “Hey Tonight” and “Molina.” Bonus tracks include a live “Hey Tonight” plus “45 Revolutions Per Minute (Parts 1 & 2), the rarest of CCR collectibles, which was packaged in a plain white sleeve alluding to the Beatles’ White Album. Produced under the spell of the Fab Four’s “Revolution No. 9,” the tape montage tries to impart the elusive Creedence humor with the help of Bay Area DJ Tom Campbell. Joel Selvin wrote the liner notes.

MVD Entertainment Group annouce plans to release VINYL!

MVD Entertainment Group (MVD) has announced plans to issue several releases on vinyl including new and previously unreleased tracks by Devo and the Dwarves, plus reissues by G.G. Allin, Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics, and more. MVD and Big Daddy have deep access to a great amount of quality content from some very collectible artists.

“We are very fortunate to be able to revisit this great catalog and bring these gems back to life in their originally intended format,” said Ed Seaman, COO of MVD.

This comes in response to a resurgence of fans, collectors, and true audiophiles who prefer the warm sound of vinyl. According to a July 2008 article in Billboard, “Indie retail started the party, but now some of the chains are carrying vinyl too. In addition to Fred Meyer and Borders, Best Buy has said publicly that it will experiment with carrying LPs.” Since retailers are becoming increasingly supportive, it was a no-brainer for MVD.

"I love vinyl...always have and always will,” Seaman. “The look, the feel, and of course the sound. And most importantly - with vinyl you get an easily digestible chunk of music to listen to - about 15 minutes per side. And then, it is time to make a decision: do I flip the album over and play the other side? Or do I pick a new record?"

Upcoming releases include…

DEVO – Watch Us Work It

This will contain four versions of the song “Watch Us Work It”: Teddy Bears Version, Original Devo Demo Version, Karaoke Version, and "Still Workin'" Version. It was recorded at Mutato Muzika in Los Angeles and produced by Sweden's famous Teddy Bears. The DELL company heard it when Paul Malmstrom and Linus Karlsson at the Mother agency in NYC pitched it as a possibility for a TV campaign for the newly developed, high-end laptop computer. DELL loved it, so they used it for nationwide TV ad campaign. The vinyl will also include “Devo Was Right About Everything” by Attery Squash (re-mix by Robert and Gerald Casale).

Info: Not available until 2009

GG ALLIN - Freaks, Faggots, Drunks and Junkies

Vinyl edition of what is probably GG Allin's greatest studio album. This was GG's fourth album when it was originally released on Homestead Records in 1988. Recorded with a backing band featuring members of New England punk/thrash heavies Psycho, this one contains some of GG's best songs. "Die When You Die" is arguably the most famous GG Allin song and this album features the original, best version of the live warhorse. It also includes GG's rewrite of David Allen Coe's "Longhair Redneck" titled "Outlaw Scumfuc." The punkest man alive (at the time) at his peak.

PLASMATICS - WENDY O WILLIAMS – Beyond the Valley of 1984

This is their second album and features some of the best songwriting of their career, as well as a lean and tight sound combing metal, punk and hard rock. A truly ground breaking release that sums up everything the band stood for and still sounds completely fresh over 25 years after its release.

DWARVES - Dwarves Limited 10 Inch

Way limited 10" picture disc vinyl split, one side Dwarves, live KSZU FM Stanford, recorded in 2004. The other side is Dwarves singer Blag Dahlia covering AC/DC (Big Balls) and the Ramones (The KKK Took My Baby Away) as well as some originals. This record is limited to 1030 copies and these are the last of them. Full color picture disc of a delightful young woman in a Mexican wrestling mask and not much else.

ABOUT:

MVD Entertainment Group (formerly Music Video Distributors, Inc) was formed by Tom Seaman in 1987. Seaman entered the music business in the early 1960s with Manhattan music retail landmark the Record Hunter, and later worked with Sam Goody, CBS Retail and JEM Distribution. While merchandising early Video Discs in the 1980s Seaman recognized the potential for the Music Video format. His belief of “why just hear the music when you can see it AND hear it” led to the formation of Music Video Distributors, a specialist in carrying the best selection of music videotapes and ultimately DVD. Ed Seaman joined the family business in 1989 and is currently C.O.O. and General Manager of MVD.

In the last 10 years, MVD has transitioned from being a one stop/wholesaler for Music Video to a leading Distributor and Label for Music Video on DVD. Some of the artists MVD has worked with include Sublime, Pixies, Bad Brains, Devo, The New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, the MC5, Dead Kennedys, Danzig, Marillion, Ween, Shane MacGowan, Stryper, Johnny Winter, and much more. Labels on MVD’s roster include Metal Mind, Inakustik, Sexy Intellectual, Cherry Red, Video Service Corp, Disconforme, and many more. Since 1999, MVD has released over 1500 titles, and was the second largest producer of Music DVD in 2007.

In 2006, MVD entered the CD Distribution business with the formation of MVD Audio. “For years our suppliers pushed us to carry CD,“ said Ed Seaman. “They were very happy with our performance with their DVDs and in 2006 we made the leap. The CD business is still a multibillion dollar industry, and we have found a great deal of success with the format already. This new venture with Big Daddy Music shall further stake our claim in the music business, and we anticipate great things from the catalog and new releases of Big Daddy’s labels. Burt Goldstein’s experience and expertise in the music business are a tremendous benefit as well; I believe that we have the opportunity together to equal a lot more than the sum of our parts.”

Tom Seaman, CEO of MVD, says “Growth is an important aspect of our business; we have grown from VHS distribution, to DVD licensing and distribution; now CD’s enter our business umbrella. We are also expanding our digital sales aggressively. We welcome Big Daddy to the MVD fold!”

By joining forces, the group will combine their diverse expertise and flexible distribution infrastructure in order to provide the labels, artists and customers with a higher level of service than ever before.

News: Look Mexico Fall Tour and new digital EP

LOOK MEXICO - Fall Tour Update / New Digital EP
-------------------------------------------------------
* U.S. Tour begins today
* Shows with Fake Problems, Cobra Skulls, Bear Colony, The Winter Sounds
* For song EP, Gasp Asp, now available digitally
-------------------------------------------------------

Look Mexico (Tallahassee, FL) hits the road today for a month-long tour of the U.S.

The band's newly converted veggie oil-powered bus will take them westward for a week of shows in Texas and Oklahoma with Bear Colony before joining up with Fake Problems and Cobra Skulls for eight days of Left Coast shenanigans. Finally, the boys will conclude their national expedition in the Southeast playing shows with The Winter Sounds.

In early October, Look Mexico will take a short break before heading back out for two additional weeks of touring along the East Coast. Eventually, they'll end up where all Beartrap bands seem to be ending up on Halloween weekend: at The Fest in Gainesville, FL. More info on those dates soon.

The national tour coincides with Lujo Records' digital release of Gasp Asp, the band's newest four song EP. You can pick it up from iTunes here.

For a limited time, you can grab a free mp3 from Gasp Asp. Check out the first track, "You're Not Afraid Of The Dark Are You?" here.

Earlier this year, Lujo released The Crucial Collection and is also responsible for unleashing Look Mexico's awesome debut full-length, This Is Animal Music, upon the world in 2007.

Gasp Asp will be receiving the vinyl treatment very soon as well; a three song seven inch version of the EP will be available in early October. Stay tuned for a pre-order news, as well an announcement regarding the stupid label responsible for this inevitable plastic disaster...

As always, I suggest you catch one of these shows if possible. Look Mexico never fail to excite and entertain. And if you're lucky, you might get spit on. Just kidding (sort of).

Song-a-Day 3.0

There are plenty of this-a-day and that-a-day (and don't forget Skull-a-Day) sites out there these days. Matt Green is doing Song-a-Day. It's not an original concept in and of itself, but Green isn't just churning out songs for the sake of it. It's an exercise for him to grow as a songwriter, so he's giving you a glimpse into his own evolution. He's done this before and on July 23rd, he's giving it another shot with Song-a-Day 3.0.

Toyota Yaris and Urban Outfitters announce latest Free Yr Radio concert dates to benefit independent radio

The Secret Machines, Dave P, Dan Deacon, and Tokyo Police Club added to concert series lineup

Seattle, WA – July, 25 2008 – The Free Yr Radio campaign, created by Toyota Yaris and Urban Outfitters to generate awareness and support for partner independent radio stations, today announced three additional concert dates that will benefit independent radio stations in Philadelphia, Omaha, and Salt Lake City.

Hosted by each partner station, the upcoming Free Yr Radio concerts are free to the public and include:

Philadelphia – Princeton, New Jersey-based WPRB will feature DJ Dave P with The Secret Machines on Tuesday, August 12 at 7 p.m. in the Urban Outfitters store located at 110 S. 36th St., Philadelphia, PA.

Omaha – KIWR will feature Dan Deacon on Sunday, September 7 at 8 p.m. in Slowdown, a bar and club next door to the Urban Outfitters located at 745 N 14th St., Omaha, NE.

Salt Lake City – KRCL will feature Tokyo Police Club on Wednesday, September 24 in the Urban Outfitters located at 12 S. 400 W. St., Salt Lake City, UT. The time of the show is TBD.
Secret Machines, Dan Deacon and Tokyo Police Club join previously-announced Free Yr Radio 2008 artists White Williams, !!!, Mudhoney, No Age and Yeasayer.

Each aspect of the Free Yr Radio campaign is designed to give partner independent stations tools to build awareness and help raise additional funds from their listener communities. Partner stations co-host concerts as a means to increase exposure, introduce themselves to new listeners, and generate support.

The campaign also features a vehicle sweepstakes that enables stations to award a brand new Yaris to one listener during their fundraising or awareness-boosting activities. The final component of the Free Yr Radio campaign is the benefit compilation album. Slated for release in late summer, this year's compilation will feature tracks donated by participating bands and other artists interested in the mission to support independent radio. All proceeds from the album are divided equally among the participating stations.

All Free Yr Radio concerts are free of charge, though show-goers must print and present an e-ticket (available from www.FreeYrRadio.com) for entry. Guests will be admitted until the venue is full. This year's Free Yr Radio concert series will run from May through October. Details about more of the upcoming concerts—including participating bands and cities—will be announced in the coming months.

"We are very excited to continue building buzz and awareness for independent radio stations across the country by providing fans with unique and memorable concert experiences," said Keith Dahl, National Marketing Manager for Toyota. "Between the exceptional Free Yr Radio concert series and the Yaris giveaway sweepstakes, we’re hopeful that our partner independent stations around the country will generate excitement in their listener communities that will translate into new listeners and additional support."

Another previously announced Free Yr Radio concert is set for Minneapolis on Wednesday, July 30 when independent station The Current hosts a performance by Yeasayer at 7 p.m. in the Urban Outfitters located at 3006 Hennepin Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN.

They And The Children - Tour / Full Album Stream

They and the Children - East Coast Tour (July 25 - Aug 03)
-------------------------------------------------------
* In support of debut full-length Home
* Stream the entire album at Punknews.org

Middletown, Connecticut's They and the Children is leaving today for a short tour of the East Coast in support of their debut full-length Home.

The record - which is available in both CD and vinyl formats - was released by Kill Normal on July 1st, 2008. You can pick up a copy from the band on tour or from the label here.

Expanding on TATC's brand of crushing, epic hardcore laid out on their 2005 EP, Thoughts On Becoming a Ghost (Tor Johnson Records), Home is even more bombastic and vibrantly dynamic, alternating between thrash-inspired riffage, slowly-churning, ominous grooves and soaring, melodic interludes. The album is a testament to the band's commitment to the DIY community, as well as a call for solidarity between those of us who realize that society is becoming so commercialized that it can barely be considered a "culture" any more.

Head on over to Punknews.org and stream the album in its entirety. You can also grab two free mp3s for the songs "Mechanical" and "Invisible."

One Small Step for Landmines release Good Men Die Young and I'm Not Feeling Well digital EP

One Small Step for Landmines Good Men Die Young And I'm Not Feeling Well - Digital EP Out Now
-------------------------------------------------------
* Includes title track, Jim Ward cover, unreleased B-side

One Small Step For Landmines (Tallahassee, F.L.) has just released a digital EP for the single "Good Men Die Young And I'm Not Feeling Well." In total, the EP contains the title track, a cover version of "Good Men Die Young" by Jim Ward (Sparta / Sleepercar) and an unreleased B-side from the band's 2007 Self-titled full-length which features guest vocals from Look Mexico's Matt Agrella.

For pure downloading rapture, click here.

Additionally, you can check out a video of "Good Men Die Young" here. It was conceived and directed by Jerrod Landon Porter, who also also designed the art for the EP. There are plans for a seven-inch version of the EP later this year as well. It will feature a bonus fourth track - a cover of "Girlfriend In A Coma" by the Smiths.

In other news, front man Kevin Allen recently recorded a few new songs in Los Angeles with drummer Tony Hajjar (Sparta, At The Drive In) and Sol Snyder (Year of the Rabbit) on bass duty. More news on the future of those tracks soon...

One Small Step For Landmines' Self-titled debut full-length was released in September of 2007 by Doghouse imprint Civil Defense League. Angular-yet-driving rock built around unforgettable melodies, massively catchy songs and a propulsive rhythm section, this Florida three piece is dynamically compelling as they are unpredictable and explosive.

"Take Me, Seriously" mp3

- One Small Step For Landmines have done something very, very right with their debut. - For The Sound

- A prime example of how to promote joy and quality in pop music, two essential qualities all too often forgotten.

Buffalo Killers new album and tour

BUFFALO KILLERS NEW ALBUM LET IT RIDE IN STORES JULY 22nd
PRODUCED BY DAN AUERBACH OF THE BLACK KEYS

SOLO WEST COAST RUN STARTS JULY 18
OPENING SLOT ON THE BLACK CROWES TOUR THIS FALL
ADDITIONAL U.S. DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED

"Ride simmers, then explodes with the fuzzy psychedelia of southern rockers crowding classic rock playlists, but without sounding dated or overtly derivative." – Cincinnati Magazine

Los Angeles, CA –Cincinnati psychedelic blues trio, Buffalo Killers, will hit the road this summer supporting their soon to be released album Let it Ride on July 22nd. Recently coming off tour with the Black Keys, the Buffalo Killers will begin a solo run of the west coast on July 18th running from Chicago to Seattle and San Francisco to Los Angeles, before opening for the Black Crowes again this fall.

Earlier this year, after wrapping their opening run for the Black Crowes, the Buffalo Killers returned to the Midwest to complete recording sessions in Akron, Ohio with producer Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys at his Akron Analog studio. The result is a 10-track album titled Let it Ride that remains deeply rooted in their signature 60s psychedelic and 70s blues rock inspired sound.

Drawing comparisons in sound to Blue Cheer, Cream, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Mountain and the Allman Brothers Band, the trio released their self-titled debut to critical raves praising them and their music as "the real raw deal" (Amplifier), "well played sludgy blues-rock" (Variety) and "deftly captures the sweaty, grimy feel of the era's best-loved soul-and blues-influenced rock" (Hartford Courant). Simply said, this is as authentic as they come.

The initial pressing of the Let it Ride vinyl version, limited to 500 copies, includes a bonus "bootleg" live concert LP recorded in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theatre during the Black Crowes tour by Mikey Jones, a fan that taped the concert and sent the band a copy. The six-track set features a mix of songs from both their self-titled debut album and "Let it Ride." Additionally, the Buffalo Killers have posted an outtake from that concert recording, their signature cover of Neil Young’s "Homegrown," on their MySpace page and website. Rolling Stone recently offered a "sneak peek" of the opening track, "Get Together Now Today," online at www.rollingstone.com.

The Buffalo Killers are brothers Zachary (vox/bass) and Andrew Gabbard (vox/guitar) with Joseph Sebaali (drums).

Oddly, although the song was recorded in 1978, the abrasive, bouncing, instrumental could be a musical blueprint for the bands coming out of Williamsburg’s disco punk scene.

"Wall of China Love Letters" mp3

Although Controlled Bleeding has been and always will be lumped into the genre of old school industrial music, their earliest inspirations were steeped in the first wave of New York City punk bands like The Dictators, Dead Boys, the Ramones and the brooding technical brilliance of King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Henry Cow. Before the Quiet, a collection of music from the early formations of the group, infused with the hunger and intensity of youth, clearly illustrates the collision of these seemingly opposing influences. Recordings from 1978-1982, assembled by main man Paul Lemos capture the different early eras of Controlled Bleeding. Before the Quiet is an incredible peek back into the early days of "anything goes" alternative music.

Kent, Ohio's ANNABEL self-released their fantastic debut EP, NOW THAT WE'RE ALIVE, earlier this year.

They play an infectious blend of indie pop with post punk dynamics. Echoes of The Get Up Kids, Superchunk and The Anniversary are present on the band's debut EP, Now That We're Alive. But, Annabel take the best from a number of different genres and forge their own unique path instead. Now That We're Alive was recorded, mixed and mastered by Aaron Rogers. The EP comes in beautiful, handmade, DIY packaging.

We are Scientists tour mostly just the states this July during "The American U.S. America Tour"

Having racked up a UK top 15 hit with first single "After Hours" and having sent the album that birthed it, Brain Thrust Mastery, to #11 on the album charts (a position the band like to refer to as "the pole position" owing to "the shape of the numbers"), We Are Scientists were ready to hang up their hats, telling anyone in earshot that they were now "officially bigger than Madonna in terms of height," and that their only professional plans were to "get laid." But after several grueling lectures from management and weeks of 'torture light' administered by the heads of Astralwerks and EMI, the affable pop duo agreed to tour the States this summer.

Brain Thrust Mastery (released last week) follows the New York band’s critically acclaimed 2005 debut, With Love & Squalor, which went gold in the U.K., and about which Spin asserted: "It might take an alchemist to morph lead into gold, but these Scientists can mix punk, funk, and a lil' bit of disco to yield a shiny, metallic bar of infectious, genre-bending rock."

To study more on We Are Scientists, hear songs, watch videos, and read advice, go to Astralwerks.

Mike Doughty discusses his song "Fort Hood" (plus video)

"Fort Hood" isn't exactly an anti-war song. It's more of a song about my own guilt for living life without thinking of the war every moment. I was invited by the USO to visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2006; I went over and gave CDs to wounded guys, most of them in their 20s, most missing limbs. It was tremendously moving. As we left the hospital, I was thinking that I wanted to never lose that feeling I felt, of incredible gratitude for everything in life.

Fort Hood is the base in Texas that's lost the most people in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The first verse is about guilt. That I can go about my daily life without thinking of the violence and the fear in Iraq, and the sacrifice people are making over there.

The first part of the second verse is about frustration with political pissing matches, instead of unity among our elected representatives to serve these guys. The second half is about how the war haunts me; how I see dudes in uniform in airports and wonder what's going on in their heads, what they've witnessed.

The bridge is about lost innocence. The lyrics are about what I wished a guy in his 20s was doing instead of being scarred by a fucked-up war. One line is, "You should blast Young Jeezy with your friends in a parking lot." I changed it from "You should blast Toby Keith with your friends in a parking lot" -- mostly for reasons of singability. But also because I realized everybody would take it as a snobby dis on the soldier. I actually meant it in passionate sympathy; it's better to be a teenage jingoist than to come back with your consciousness or body shattered, knowing the tragic naivete of jingoism. Young guys go over there and come back scarred -- bodily, often, but also psychologically, such that so many of them will have the burden of post-traumatic stress disorder, nightmares, haunting images.

I grew up an Army brat on Army bases -- pretty much all the adult men had been in Vietnam, and looking at their collective bizarre behavior in hindsight, I realize I grew up in a crazy land where every adult man had post-traumatic stress disorder.

My dad never talked about Vietnam to my mom. As -- I think -- a passive-aggressive means of hurting my father, she took us all to see Milos Foreman's film version of Hair (at the military cinema on a NATO base in Belgium!) without telling us what it was about. My dad was upset -- though he laughed, bitterly, when the character Berger got accidentally shipped off to the Vietnam war and killed in action.

The genesis of my song was: I downloaded from WFMU.org an mp3 of the Japanese cast of Hair doing "Sunshine." It was surreal and fun through the verses, which were in Japanese, but when it came to the end, the chorus was in English -- it was chilling, and so apt, and my eyes moistened up on the subway.

I moved to New York when I was 18, and the music everywhere was hip hop and house, and often based on samples and re-jiggered melodies from other songs. It's kind of weird in singer-songwriter land to take a chorus from another song, but it felt really natural to me.

New Brass EP - Free Download!

BRASS - 3 New Songs for Free Download

Philadelphia's Brass have officially released their new three-song EP, A Small Breath, for free digital download. For more information, go here. For instant gratification, voila!.

The band will also be pressing a very limited run of 100 CDs, which will be available at shows and on their website in a couple of weeks. A Small Breath was recorded by students at Drexel University in January and February as part of an engineering course. Bravo, higher education! These three songs sound amazing, continuing the tradition of beautifully-clashing aesthetics established on Brass' recent eight-song debut, Set & Drift. Both releases masterfully establish a common ground between soaring melodies, heart-stopping crescendos and math-y, post-punk rhythms. A must-listen for fans of The Dismemberment Plan, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbox or Circa Survive.

And while we're in a giving mood, you can also download three MP3s from Set & Drift here.
Happy listening!

DOA announce 30th Anniversary Tour

In the past thirty years D.O.A. have released: 13 albums, 20 singles, EPs and 7"s, 10 videos and been apart of 14 compilations. D.O.A. have sold one million albums in their storied career. Band Leader Joe Shithead Keithley has gone on to start his own label Sudden Death records and with members of D.O.A started a side project called Band of Rebels. Keithley captured his musical history in his Canadian bestseller autobiography I, Shithead - A Life In Punk (Arsenal Pulp Press). In 2003, Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell declared December 21st to be "D.O.A. Day" in honour of the band's 25th anniversary.

Keithley has teamed up with co-conspirators bassist Randy Rampage and drummer James Hayden to come up with a ton of great new songs for a new album to be released this summer. Bob Rock, who has produced albums for Metallica, Motley Crue, Cranberries, Bon Jovi, The Cult and others is producing the band's 13th full length album, Northern Avenger, in time for their 30th anniversary.

What did the godfather of punk rock have to say about working with Rock? "" Working with Bob Rock is fucking cool,” says Keithley. “D.O.A. and Bob go a long ways back to the early days of Vancouver's punk rock scene. If there ever was a guy who can record a heavy sound, it's Bob and D.O.A.'s a heavy band, so it bloody well makes sense!"

D.O.A. has always maintained an uncompromising anarchist populist political stance. The band is known for its outspoken political opinions and has a history of performing for many causes and benefits. Its slogan is "TALK-ACTION=0". The band has been active on many issues, including anti-racism, anti-globalization, freedom of speech and the environment.

Cool New Stuff from Red Leader Records

RED LEADER RECORDS - Limited Edition 10-inch Birthday Picture Disc Available Now!

* Only 500 Pressed

* Featuring covers from Scream Hello, The New Dress, Attica! Attica! and Nakatomi Plaza
SCREAM HELLO - New EP!

* Pre-order Smart & Stupid from Interpunk

The hits keep coming from the Red Leader camp these days as label has just released an extremely limited, hand-numbered 10-inch picture disc featuring four amazing covers from four amazing bands. This delicious piece of vinyl was originally conceived as an elaborate birthday surprise from one half of the Red Leader team (Matt) to the other half (Claire)...with a little help from four "sweetheart" bands on the label, too.
Scream Hello tackles Superchunk's "Hyper Enough," The New Dress takes on "No Depression" by The Carter Family (as inspired by the Uncle Tupelo version) while Attica! Attica! covers "No Children" by The Mountain Goats. Rounding out the compilation is Nakatomi Plaza's rendition of Build To Spill's "Car." Of course, like all things totally awesome, there is a finite number available, and the slices of this delectable birthday disc will disappear quickly. Limited to 500 copies (and never to be repressed), the ten inch is available exclusively from Red Leader and the bands at shows. You can go here to order your copy now. The label will also send you the mp3s for all the songs, not to mention some extra goodies. Plus, a few randomly chosen orders will have the option of receiving a test pressing of the record. Happy Birthday, vinyl freaks!

Moving on, New Brunswick, N.J. four piece Scream Hello are preparing for the release of their new EP via Red Leader, Smart & Stupid. These four incredible songs are the precursor to Everything Is Always Still Happening, the band's upcoming full-length due out in the Summer of 2008. Smart & Stupid will be out on April 8th but you can pre-order a copy from Interpunk. Take it from someone who has spun both the LP and EP approximately seven kabillion times...these new songs are truly incredible. You can stream a couple tracks on their myspace page. Get psyched!

Beside the new releases, the next two months will find Scream Hello getting way active on the road, playing shows with Weston and Ensign...plus a short tour with The Gaslight Anthem. Get doubly psyched!

And finally, don't forget that Red Leader has made their new 20-song sampler free to download! Go here for unreleased/rare tracks from End Of A Year, Marathon, Nakatomi Plaza, Dear Tonight, FireWhenReady and Scream Hello...plus awesome released material from Polar Bear Club, De La Hoya, Attica! Attica! and The New Dress.

Chinese Democracy?

Check this out. Dr Pepper will give everyone in America (except Slash and Buckethead) a can of their soda if Guns N Roses (aka the Axl Rose band) releases Chinese Democracy. It's a good move on Dr Pepper's part, because it gets them a lot of publicity and is unlikely to cost them a cent. I'd rather they keep their can of soda though, because the worst thing that can happen is for Chinese Democracy to see the light of day. Right now, the album has almost mythic proportions. Even if you expect it to be good, which I don't, the chances of it living up to the hype of an album whose recording began a decade ago (and whose roots reach back several years before that) are extremely slim. Everyone is waiting for this album, some for a classic and others for a train wreck. For the former, it's unlikely that this Axl-only project will compare favorably to those albums on which he collaborated with Slash, Duff and Izzy. For the latter, the album itself isn't likely to produce greater evidence that Axl Rose no longer matters musically than his inability to get the thing out. So the first camp will be happiest as long as they have hope for a good record and the latter will be happiest as long as they can laugh at Axl's inability to release the stupid record. Frankly, if he's not embarrassed that he's taken this long, why would a challenge from a soft drink company shame him into anything?

Eels invite President Bush to their DC show on March 29th

E (aka Mark Oliver Everett of the eels) sent this letter to the president:

Mr. President,

My name is Mark Oliver Everett. I am the singer in an American rock band called EELS You may recall using our album "Daisies of the Galaxy" as an example during your campaign for the presidency in 2000 The album was supposed to be a bad example for the kids of America. Something about inappropriate language and messages. You even had my lyrics on your website. lt was quite an ordeal I even wrote about it in my new book, Things The Grandchildren Should Know (coming out this fall in the U.S. - it's already a bestseller in England, where it just came out!)

Mr. President, I know that you're a Christian, and Christ taught forgiveness. So in the spirit of forgiveness and fence-mending, I'd like to let bygones be bygones and invite you and the First Lady to attend our Washington, DC concert, March 29th lt's right down the road from you at the Sixth & | Historic Synagogue. lt's a really cool place for concerts. lf you're more comfortable at a different house of worship, we're also doing concerts at churches in Philadelphia and New Haven the nights before and after the DC show. In the name of tolerance, we are trying to represent many faiths on this tour.

lf you come to the show, I would be happy to give you complimentary copies of our brand new best of and rarities CDs, "Meet The EELS" and "Useless Trinkets" (which feature some of the very tracks your campaign used as bad examples for our country's youth) that i will even be happy to autograph for you. These tracks can be loaded onto your Presidential iPod as well. lf you're busy, I understand, but I wanted to put it out there: Let's forgive and forget. lt's the only way to change the world.

Thank you for your time, Mr. President.

Sincerely,
E

New Raconteurs Consolers of the Lonely album out suddenly on March 25th

From their press release:

"Album" meaning: full length vinyl, CD and digital formats; and "everywhere" meaning: local mom and pop Indie retailers, corporate superstores, supermarkets, iTunes, Amazon, the band's own website and any other location that could get the record up and going this quickly (some places couldn’t move this fast, so they will join in as soon as they can).

It contains 14 new recordings and is being released globally on Third Man Records in conjunction with our marketing/distribution partners, XL Recordings and Warner Brothers Records.

The album was mastered and completed in the first week of March. It was then taken immediately to a vinyl pressing plant. Then to a CD pressing plant. Then preparations to sell it digitally began. March 25th became the soonest date to have it available in EVERY FORMAT AT ONCE. The band have done no interviews or advertisements for this record before this announcement.

The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised. We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding it’s availability, reception or perception.

With this release, The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all important "first week sales". We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by it's first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it.

Another purpose was to also allow people to have their own choice as to exactly which format they would like to hear the album in IMMEDIATELY, rather than having to wait for their favorite format to become available. The band are also not releasing any version of this record that contains bonus tracks. Musically this album will be the same as the band created it no matter what format it is purchased in (The sound quality of each format however, is a different story. The Raconteurs recommend hearing it on vinyl, but the choice is of course up to the listener).

The band also prefer that fans buy the album as a whole instead of breaking up the tracks, but until iTunes and other digital services allows bands to release their albums with the option of NOT breaking it up, it will be sold in that fashion on those particular sites. On the band's website however, the album will be sold in its entirety as an mp3 at 320kb bit rate. Also in Japan, fans will be able to download the record via their mobile phones, as that is how a majority of recorded music is consumed there.

The reason we are announcing this release one week ahead of time is because of retail pre-ordering and stocking, information about this album's imminent release was bound to come to light and could be confusing to fans. Also in the event that the record leaks, we didn’t want this method of release to be seen as a REACTION to such a leak. It's not. The actual worst thing about a leak is the usual poor sound quality, akin to watching a movie on a wristwatch instead of in a theater. Which for the album's creators is a bit of a letdown, but again, it is completely up to the listener.

There will be a video up on the internet for the first single, "Salute Your Solution", on the 25th as well, provided it gets edited in time. We just filmed it the other day!

We hope not to confuse anyone with too many options, or deny them the formats that they like best. The Raconteurs feel very strongly that music has worth and should be treated as such. Thank you to all those who respect music in this fashion, and thank you to our label partners for working with us to get this album to fans in as many formats as possible all at once.

Thank you, and we hope that you enjoy "Consolers Of The Lonely".

Sincerely,
The Raconteurs

Chapter 27 trailer

This movie is likely more about insanity than music, but it delves into the mind of Mark David Chapman's obsession with John Lennon. The film is based on crime journalist Jack Jones' 1992 book Let Me Take You Down: Inside the Mind of Mark David Chapman. The film, whose title comes from Chapman's idea of an unwritten 27th chapter to Catcher in the Rye, certainly shows more taste in naming than the book. The film hits New York theaters on March 28th.

Left Lane Cruiser on tour!

From Alive/Naturalsound:

Los Angeles, CA - March, 2008 - Left Lane Cruiser is on tour in support of their debut Alive Records release "Bring Yo Ass to the Table." Comprised of Joe Evans on slide guitar and vocals with Brenn Beck on one big-ass bass drum, harmonica and a toolbox full of percussive gear, the raw blues duo of LLC have honed a sound unlike any other where everything is an instrument: trash cans, paint trays, hubcaps, ladders, you name it.

"While it suddenly seems fashionable to crank out a few Robert Johnson slide guitar riffs alongside a meth-fuelled drummer, Left Lane Cruiser actually possess enough chops to write some memorable songs. What’s at the root of them is the unshakeable rhythm that singer/guitarist Freddy J IV and drummer Brenn “Sausage Paw” Beck create together, leaving plenty of space for Freddy to strut and holler over top. The line between hip-hop even blurs slightly on heavy stomps like 'Big Momma' and 'Pork ‘N Beans' But it just goes to prove that when reduced to its basic elements, the music is all rock’n’roll." - Jason Schneider / Exclaim!

Brimstone Howl US and European Tour (and MP3)

Los Angeles, CA - February 28, 2008 - Nebraska's BRIMSTONE HOWL is heading back on the road in support of their debut Alive Record's release "Guts of Steel" - co-produced and engineered by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. The band will wrap their U.S. tour after performing several SXSW showcases then begin a month long European tour. Alive Records is currently offering an exclusive MP3 "Cyclone Boy," available for download on their website.

With a furious mix of 60's influenced garage and old school punk, Brimstone Howl's Alive Records debut has been described as "cranked lo-fi blues rock" by Uncut magazine, "razor sharp snake rock" by NME and "lo-fi, loose punk wallowing in the blues" by Kerrang. Delivering in-your-face live performances, they describe themselves as "Guitar sluts and hook thieves with hearts of chrome, but with pretty good lyrics," and their music as "burnt blues, steady tom beats, and looooooowwwwwd fuzz."

Brimstone Howl is rounded out by John Ziegler (guitar/vocals), Nick Waggoner (guitar), Austin Ulmer (bass) and Calvin Retzlaff (drums).
Myspace

"If retro-styled garage rock gave you an icky feeling in 2007, take two listens to Guts of Steel and burn your red-and-white clothes in the morning. Production by Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach give Brimstone Howl some requisite vintage-sounding reverb, but there's nothing reverent about these Nebraskans'unholy hot-wiring of the Sonics, the Damned and the Blues Explosion." - MAGNET Magazine

Qtrax

Apparently, this was supposed to go live last night, but is being delayed once again. It's been in the works for awhile, but if it's finally OK'd and goes live, then it should mean free access to millions of songs from the four majors. What's the catch? Advertising. You have to watch the ads (kinda like TV).

So, what will be the effect on tangible music products (records and CDs)? How will this effect indie bands and labels? Can they get a piece of this pie? The times they are a-changin', except that the major labels are still gonna be calling the shots, I suppose. Okay, maybe they aren't a-changin' that much.

There are articles in Rolling Stone and CNN today.

House of Eternity to star Geoff Tate and Candice Night

Here's some particularly bad news for anyone who likes good music and/or good movies: Geoff Tate (of Queensrÿche) and Candice Night (of Blackmore's Night) will make their acting debuts together in House of Eternity. After hearing recent releases from both of them, the movie theater will feel like a house of eternity unless they can both act better than they can rock. I'm guessing there won't be much improvement, but at least they can't be much worse. I am surprised that Geoff Tate's contract doesn't require that the movie be renamed Höüse öf Ëtërnïty.

As if we needed more proof that Rolling Stone was a corporate monster...

We, the undersigned independent record labels, wish to share our indignation regarding Rolling Stone’s November 15th pull out editorial, which featured the names of our artists in conjunction with an ad for Camel cigarettes. This editorial cartoon gives every impression of being part and parcel of the advertisement wrapped around it.

The use of an artist’s name to promote a brand or product should be done only with the artist’s explicit consent, something that was neither solicited nor obtained from the labels or bands.

When questioned, Rolling Stone has referred to the “Indie Rock Universe” pull out section as an “editorial”, but it hardly seems accidental that this editorial content is wrapped in a giant ad from R.J. Reynolds announcing their support for independent artists and labels. The idea that this was a coincidence in any way seems dubious at best. There are two other pull out sections in this same issue of Rolling Stone. Both are wrapped in advertising, but neither of these ads could be construed as part of the editorial content within.

Many of the bands named, and the labels that represent them, are very unhappy with the implication that they have any involvement with R.J. Reynolds and Camel cigarettes. We ask that Rolling Stone apologize for blurring the line between editorial and advertisement, and in doing so, implying that the bands named support the product being advertised.

Sincerely, Kill Rock Stars, Touch and Go, Skin Graft, Lovepump United, Lucky Madison, 5RC, Audio Dregs, and Fryk Beat.

RIP: Kevin DuBrow

I'm not good at writing these things, because I so hate the dishonesty of sentimentality that I end up giving dead people a hard time rather than a break. However, I did read two fitting tributes to the colorful Quiet Riot singer. Metal Mark's tribute takes an honest look at DuBrow's public self and Ray's is a little more personal. Both avoid being overly sentimental and dishonest and, in the end, do more justice to DuBrow's life than absurd "things won't be the same without you" statements.

Ryan Holiday - Gender Politics Vol One

Download Ryan's new album for FREE here. It's different...in a good way. Seriously, it's not going to be everyone's thing, but based on what I've heard, he could take a lot of people by surprise. A review will be coming soon.

Van Morrison "Best of" out November 6th

From the press release:

THE ONLY CAREER-SPANNING VAN MORRISON "BEST OF" ALBUM AVAILABLE; OUT NOVEMBER 6TH

(Los Angeles, CA) - More than 40 years since bursting out of Belfast with Them, Van Morrison continues to make great music, continues to tour the world, and continues to inspire and engage new generations of fans and artists alike.

Here on Still On Top - The Greatest Hits (Hip-O/Ume) are 21 classic tracks that chronicle Van's incredible journey so far; all remaining true to his mantra "it's always been about soul."

Featuring selections spanning his work from 1964 to 2005, Still On Top - The Greatest Hits is the definitive collection of Van's original recordings. There are musical milestones from five decades of prolific recording, including - for the first time on a Greatest Hits collection - his powerful songs from the 90s and the new millennium. Among the gems included are 1995's "Days Like This," an alternative version of 1997's "Healing Game" and an already-classic from 2005, "Stranded."

Still On Top - The Greatest Hits moves seamlessly across the genres, reflecting a career which began in the 60s with the hat-trick of "Here Comes The Night," "Gloria" and "Brown-Eyed Girl" and has not faltered since. Highlights from the Seventies include "Domino," "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)," and "Warm Love." Among those selected from the Eighties are the romantic ballad "Someone Like You" (one of many Van songs borrowed by the big screen, in this case for Bridget Jones's Diary) and the glorious "Have I Told You Lately?."

Flogging Molly and Bouncing Souls set to Headline Charity Event in Hollywood December11, 2007

From Side One Dummy Records:

Los Angeles, October 19, 2007. The second annual ROCK TO ROLL charity event spearheaded by SideOneDummy Co-Founder Joe Sib is happening this year at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, CA on December 11th. The event will directly benefit the non-profit organization WHEELS FOR HUMANITY. Headlining the event this year is FLOGGING MOLLY just back from recording their new album in Ireland. Also on the bill will be BOUNCING SOULS and DEAD TO ME. The night will kick off with a set from PUNK ROCK KARAOKE (featuring members of NOFX, Bad Religion, Adolescents & Social Distortion).

The WHEELS FOR HUMANITY mission is to provide increased self sufficiency and mobility to people with disabilities throughout the world, without regard to political affiliation, religious belief or ethnic identity. WFH began in 1996 and is a non-profit organization and has since helped over 30,000 people with disabilities in over 58 countries gain increased mobility and dignity. WFH is located in North Hollywood where a small professional staff and a large volunteer workforce collect, refurbish and ship donated wheelchairs.

Last year, Joe Sib's ROCK TO ROLL benefit concert at the Key Club rose over $27,000 for WFH. The average wheel chair costs $150 to refurbish, which means last year's event directly improved the lives of roughly 180 individuals in need. This year we've moved the event to the Avalon Theater in Hollywood and our goal is to double our fundraising efforts. TICKETS go on sale Friday Nov.9th

Be friends with Led Zeppelin

In light of the upcoming gig and repackaging, Led Zeppelin now has a Myspace page. You too can be "friends" with one of the all time greats (even if that friendship with John Bonham is posthumous).

In addition to the Myspace presence and yet another repackaging/remastering, Led Zeppelin's whole catalog (yeah, that means Coda too) will finally be available through all online music retailers as of November 13th. Once again, I have to ask, who doesn't own these albums already?

Oh yeah, and they've partnered with Verizon for Zeppelin ringtones, so they've managed to find the one format in which I don't want to hear Led Zeppelin. I don't even grow tired of "Stairway" on the radio, but I'm sick of the ringtones before I even hear them.
